Thursday 7:00 ‐ 8:30 P.M. (Jan 9 – Mar 12)
The Mid-City Community Music Performance Workshop is a ten-week intensive seminar in playing in a band. This is an opportunity for musicians of all levels to improve their skills playing with others in a small ensemble, focusing on a few songs and polishing them up for a public performance at the end of the workshop.
It covers the technical aspects of sound equipment, the dynamics of playing in rhythm with others, adjusting sound volume to leave space for other band members, and communicating effectively with bandmates.
Participants of all levels and instruments (including voice) are welcome to apply to the workshop but they should have a basic competency with their instrument and some experience playing with others (i.e. jam sessions). Participants will be selected so that each group has a balance or instruments and experience.
To whichever extent is possible, a real-life band situation will be simulated. Participants will be encouraged to find solutions within their group, just as band members do in real life. As a result of this course, participants will be more comfortable and have improved confidence playing in a group. Topics include:
Communicating with bandmates
Team Building Exercises
Giving and taking constructive criticism
Learning the basics of setting up and using a PA system
Balancing sound levels
Responding to unexpected circumstances in real-time
Using sound engineering vocabulary
Basic Improv Training
Leading others in musical compositions
