Literacy Through Poetry

May 22, 2020

The 60 minute poetry classes have a format of 20/20/20. In the first 20 minutes students will hear poems that range from contemporary, traditional, Hip Hop, Rap and other genre's that resonant with seasonal themes such as Black History Month, Latino Heritage Month, or Asian & Pacific Island Month.
Film clips will also showcase national and local poetry talent like Tupac, Rudy Francisco, or Ant Black.

The second twenty minutes involves students writing original poems with the assistance of poetry prompts that are lines of poetry or titles paraphrased from the poems in the first twenty minutes.

The third segment of class has students reading individual poems or reading in collage or teach poems. This is the part of class that students interested in finding their voice find confidence and creativity enhanced as they practice putting pen to page.
