Teen Outreach: Juvenile Court and Community Schools

Since the Spring of 2017, Mid-City Community Music has been partnering with the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) Juvenile Court and Community Schools (JCCS) to bring guitar, ukulele and art instruction to adolescents who are:

  • Wards of the court

  • Referred by social services

  • On probation

  • Incarcerated youth

  • Pregnant minors

  • Foster youth

  • Expelled teens

  • Chronically truant youth

  • Students in drug treatment centers

  • Neglected or abused children

  • Homeless youth

Research continues to show learning to play an instrument can improve students' math and verbal skills, develop self-esteem, and build healthy social networks.

2nd and 4th Monday, 7 - 9 PM

We're most fortunate to have James and Mel Clarkston working with us in these Community Schools.  Please see some of their students' musical and artistic works below.

Mel has a passion for cleans our local beaches of plastic trashes and repurposing it into works of art.  Below are two example of how her high schools students at 37ECB Community School incorporated her beach plastic into music themed art work.

Here's James leading some students at Bayside Blended school in a  bilingual performance of a popular holiday song:
